FAQs
Q: Is your bookshop accessible?
A: Up to a point – we’re currently housed in a basement premises down a set of steps which can cause difficulties – check out our accessibility page where we explain how we’ve done our best to mitigate for these.
Q: Can I order books online for collection or delivery?
A: Yes! We can get you anything in print, we are always happy to order specific titles into the shop. Sometimes we even decide to stock a title because of your tips! You can contact us here to order a book for collection or delivery.
Q: Can you send books internationally?
A: Often, yes. Customs regulations and shipping charges have been changing frequently in recent years, so please use the order form here to inquire and get a quote.
Q: Can I ask for a book recommendation?
A: Yes, please do!! We all love chatting about books and helping you find just the right read for the moment you’re in.
Q: Do you sell or repair typewriters?
A: Alas we no longer sell or repair machines commercially, but check out this page with useful information on how to repair, buy and sell typewriters. We do still offer ribbon replacement, but you have to book – info@typewronger.com
Q: Do you have a bathroom?
A: No, we do not have a public bathroom on the premises, but McDonald Road Library has accessible bathroom facilities.
Q: Do you accept National Book Tokens?
A: Yes! It is worth noting that Book Tokens can only be used for purchasing books with an ISBN, so you can’t use them for buying zines, pamphlets, stationery, or other merch. We also have our own Letters of Credit, which are vouchers that are typed up on a typewriter by a member of staff, and these invite the recipient to arrange a free reading consultation with one of our booksellers!
Q: I’ve written a book/pamphlet/zine, will you stock it?
A: Perhaps! Be aware we never stock books printed by Amazon (no exceptions), and don’t tend to take print on demand titles in general. We do specialise in proper small presses, pamphlets and zines – if you’ve got stock (not printed by Amazon) and can deal with us directly do email us on info@typewronger.com to work out an appointment to come in for a chat. We can also help you with all the nitty-gritty of how to deal with bookshops (invoicing, margins etc)
Q: Are you hiring?
A: Almost never. When we are hiring, we will advertise here on our website and on social media. In the meantime, please don’t send speculative CVs as we don’t have the capacity to keep these on file. We are always happy to chat and give advice on how to get into bookselling, which is a deeply competitive industry, especially when applying to work in indie bookshops.
Q: Do you have any events?
A: Yes! We run a free events program year round, from book launches to poetry readings to book groups, as well as our monthly open mic! All of our events are free to attend, you can find out more about what’s coming up on our events page.
Q: Can I put on an event at Typewronger?
A: Perhaps! Check out this page about running events at Typewronger.
Q: Can I take photos or film in the shop?
A: You are very welcome to take a picture or two as a memento of your time in the shop, and you can tag us on social media @typewronger. Please don’t photograph or film anyone without their explicit consent, including our staff. If you’re a Booktoker or Bookstagrammer or Booktuber please make yourself known to whoever’s on shift – we’re happy to let you film provided you don’t disturb other customers, but it’s weird if you just start without asking! If you want to take photographs for any other reason (fashion shoots etc) we offer a service where you can gain access to the shop outside of hours. Rates depend on purpose, but our standard commercial rate to rent the shop is £100/hr.
Q: Can I propose/get married in your bookshop?
A: If you’re a regular at Typewronger, or your partner is, or if you met here and are friends of the shop then of course you can propose in the shop, and we might even be able to arrange for you to have a wedding ceremony here, do reach out to tee@typewronger.com If you’re not already Typos* and you’re just looking for a bookshop-style venue I’m afraid we’re probably not the right match, but there are plenty of other bookshops in Edinburgh that will do a much better job for you.
Q: Do you allow dogs?
A: Yes! Dogs are welcome here!
